The TEMPUR Material was originally developed in the 1970s at NASA Ames Research Center, California, in order to improve seating comfort and g-force protection in spacecrafts. Due to small-scale production techniques commercial applications were, for many years, limited to medical cushions and mattresses for pressure sore prevention.

Perfected by Tempur
In 1991, after extensive material and production development at Tempur World's Dan-Foam factory in Denmark, the large-scale 'Space Foam' technology was ready for launch. It was now possible to offer the exceptional pressure relief and comfort of the NASA material for private use as well as in hospitals, clinics and nursing homes around the world.

Certified space technology
In 1996 Tempur-Pedic was licensed by the United States Space Foundation to use the official "Certified Technology" seal on TEMPUR product packaging and marketing materials. Only those products and services certified as having originated in U.S. space efforts, or used in space flight can employ this seal.

Reduces the need to toss and turn
The improved circulation influenced by the TEMPUR Mattress significantly reduces the need to toss and turn in bed thereby improving sleep quality. A clinical study showed that an average turning of 80-100 times per night would reduce to 17-20 times on a TEMPUR Mattress.

Pressure relief is the key to comfort
The pressure on a human body lying on a bed can be measured using an elastic 'quilt' containing pressure sensors connected to a computer. The TEMPUR Mattress was compared to a top quality spring mattress. The results were displayed on the computer screen through a colour code method and also a three-dimensional graphic view of the pressure distribution

Light blue and blue indicate areas of low pressure. Green, yellow and red indicate areas of high pressure and discomfort. The results show that by far the best pressure relief was obtained with the TEMPUR Mattress.
